Guwahati: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on November 21 expressed concern over alleged widespread corruption in land compensation for the Lada-Sarli section of the Frontier Highway. He said that preliminary investigations revealed “large-scale misuse” of government funds.
Speaking at the Nyishi Elite Society (NES) General Conference in Koloriang, Khandu said the state would take strict action after the investigation was completed and that misuse of taxpayer funds would not be tolerated.
The Chief Minister said that irregularities in the compensation process had delayed the Frontier Highway project, a vital road running along the India-China border.
Officially designated as National Highway 913, the highway stretches approximately 1,750 to 1,840 km and aims to improve defense preparedness and connectivity for remote border villages.
Although the project was targeted to be completed by March 2027, the timeline is now expected to be extended. In response to the allegations, the state government has suspended four officials and recommended the suspension of IAS officer Himanshu Nigam for alleged involvement in improper land valuation and compensation.
The Fact-Finding Committee (FFC) has reported irregularities that include payments for non-existent properties and inflated valuations. Its final report is expected on November 30, 2025.
Khandu appealed to community-based organizations, including the NES, to lead efforts against corruption and address the growing “money culture,” especially in view of the upcoming Panchayat and Municipal elections.
He stressed that community vigilance is essential to prevent such scams.
In addition to eliminating corruption, the Chief Minister emphasized the role of the NES in promoting unity among Arunachal’s tribes.
He welcomed public attention to environmental concerns and expressed concern, particularly over the rampant mountain clearing in the Itanagar Capital Region.
He also called for reforms to the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system to prevent illegal entry into the state, promote respect for work to reduce dependence on migrant workers, improve education quality, and strengthen community campaigns against drug abuse.
The Frontier Highway is considered a key strategic project for India and a game-changer for the border districts of Arunachal Pradesh.
However, persistent allegations of corruption have fueled public demand for greater accountability and transparency in the project.
