12% duty on cheap steel imports, domestic industry hopes for relief

New Delhi New Delhi: The Indian government’s decision to impose a temporary duty of 12% on some steel imports is expected to provide some relief to the domestic industry. JSW Steel Chief Executive Jayant Acharya said that this move will help reduce the impact of cheap foreign steel and give Indian industry a level playing field. This duty has been implemented for 200 days.

In recent years, imports of cheap steel from China, South Korea and Japan have increased, affecting domestic production and forcing companies to reduce production. Steel imports in 2025 reached the highest level in nine years.

Acharya also said that the company is looking at options to invest in coal mines in India, while currently the company imports coal from Australia, America and Mozambique.
