150 Students Hospitalised After Suspected Food Poisoning At Orphanage School In Sangli

In a suspected case of food poisoning reported at an orphanage school in Umadi town of Jat taluka in Maharashtra’s Sangli district, around 150 students were hospitalised on Monday after they vomitted and showed diarrhea-like symptoms after consuming dinner served by the school staff on Sunday night.

As per sources, the students were served leftover food from a marriage function. After they developed abdominal pain and started vomitting, the district administration was informed and the students were moved to nearby government hospitals in Sangli.

District collector of Sangli Raja Dayanidhi told Republic, “Around 11.30pm on August 27 night, some 150 students in the ashram felt uneasy and complained of abdominal pain and symptoms of diarrhea and started vomiting, following which they were shifted to nearby hospitals in the district. As of now, all of them are out of danger and doing fine.”

When asked to confirm if the food served was from a marriage function, Dayanidhi said, “Even we have got the information, but we can’t come to any conclusion yet. An inquiry has been ordered in this matter.”

The collector further added, “We have sent the food samples and stool samples of the patients for lab test. Once the reports come, action will be taken against those found guilty.”
