19 lives impacted by 5 organ transplant donations across India
Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said the state’s deceased donor organ transplant program has facilitated five donations, giving new life to 19 people suffering from end-stage organ failure across India.
The organs donated were three hearts, four livers and two lungs. Since there are only kidney transplant facilities available in Goa, all 10 donated kidneys were successfully transplanted into patients enrolled in registered Goa transplant hospitals.
The fifth and most recent, successful cadaver organ transplant under the Nav Jivit of the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) was conducted at Goa Medical College (GMC).
“A man who was declared brain dead donated his kidney, giving new life to two recipients who successfully underwent transplant at GMC,” Rane said. Of collective compassion and generosity.
A 40-year-old native of Jharkhand, who was living and working in Goa for five months, sustained severe head injury due to a fall and was declared brain dead by a brain death certification panel of experts approved by the state-appropriate authority, Neurologist. Was declared dead. Dr. Sanath Bhatkar and internal medicine physician Dr. Prathamesh.
The man’s family decided to donate his organs, giving a new lease of life to patients suffering from end-stage kidney failure.
For medical reasons, only the kidneys were viable and suitable for transplantation. SOTTO Goa allotted kidneys to two patients registered at GMC as per their priority ranking in the waiting list based solely on medical criteria.
Currently, there are 51 patients on the waiting list for the deceased donor kidney transplant program in Goa.
