4 accused get life imprisonment in Lajpat Nagar bomb blast case
New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Thursday sentenced the four convicts in the 1996 Lajpat Nagar bomb blast case to life imprisonment for the rest of their lives without any remission, citing the gravity of the crime. The blast killed 13 people and injured about 40. “Considering the seriousness of the offense which resulted in the death of innocent persons and considering the role played by each of the accused persons, all these accused persons are sentenced to life imprisonment, without any remission, till natural life. The accused, if out on bail, are “directed to surrender immediately before the concerned court and their bail bonds are cancelled,” the bench said. The apex court said that a major market in the heart of the capital city has been attacked and we can tell that it has not been dealt with with the necessary promptness and attention. “To our great dismay, we are compelled to observe that this may be due to the involvement of influential persons, which is evident from the fact that only a few of the many accused persons have been prosecuted. In our view, the matter ought to have been handled with promptness and sensitivity at all levels, the bench said. On the evening of May 21, 1996, there was a powerful explosion in the busy Lajpat Nagar market, killing 13 people. Expressing concern over the delay in hearing the matter, a three-judge bench comprising Justices BR Gavai, Vikram Nath and Sanjay Karol said that expeditious hearing of such matters is the need of the hour, especially when it pertains to national security and the common man.
