5 people died after drinking poisonous syrup containing methyl alcohol
Ahmedabad: 5 people died while 2 others fell ill after drinking poisonous syrup containing methyl alcohol in Gujarat. Sick people have been admitted to the hospital. Police gave this information on Thursday. The police have registered a case and started investigating the matter. This incident happened in Kheda, Gujarat. People had bought this syrup from a grocery story. The deceased are said to be from Bagdu and Bilodara villages. All five deaths occurred over the course of two days. The condition of one person is said to be critical. The syrup is said to be from an Ayurvedic company.
At least five people have died in the last two days due to suspected consumption of poisonous Ayurvedic syrup containing methyl alcohol in Gujarat’s Kheda district, news agency PTI reported. Two people who drank the syrup have been admitted to the hospital. Preliminary investigation revealed that the ayurvedic syrup, branded with the name ‘Kalmeghasav – Asav Arishta’, was sold to around 50 people by a shopkeeper in Bilodara village near Nadiad town in Kheda district.
Kheda district superintendent of police Rajesh Gadhiya said the report of a villager’s blood sample confirmed that methyl alcohol was mixed in the syrup before it was sold. Five people have lost their lives after drinking the syrup during the last two days, while two are still undergoing treatment. Three people including the shopkeeper have been detained for investigation into this incident. It is known that methyl alcohol is a poisonous substance.
State DGP Vikas Sahay said that there could be presence of methanol in the syrup. Because of this, people who drink the syrup may die. In this case, about fifty people have been interrogated who were given this syrup tonic. Shopkeeper Kishore’s father had also consumed this syrup. He was also admitted to the hospital. The price rate of this syrup is Rs 130. The shopkeeper had bought it for Rs 100. The incident is being investigated. The victims complained of chest pain after drinking the syrup. All five died between 27 and 28 November.
