Jalandhar: Lawyer receives extortion call from abroad

Jalandhar: Three days after Mandeep Singh Sachdev, a prominent city lawyer, accused a Canadian-based extortionist of harassment, the police have provided him with four gunmen. Two policemen will be deployed for his security, while two more women have been deployed for his wife and daughter. To show solidarity, the District Bar Association (DBA) has declared a ‘no-work day’ tomorrow. Sandeep Singh Sunny, a Canadian resident of Nakodar, sent textile businessman Sam Kwatra to Sachdev’s office on Thursday evening to extort Rs 50,000 from him. Sunny was allegedly linked to an accused in a 17-year-old kidnapping case in which Sachdev was allegedly the defense lawyer.

However, Sam Kwatra clarified to police teams that he was also a victim and did not even know the money he was trying to extort was actually extortion money. He was detained for about an hour and released after questioning. Sachdev alleged that Sunny already has two extortion cases filed against him and is also posting against his wife and daughter, which is deeply troubling him. The lawyers alleged that extortion cases are not new to the legal community, especially when a lawyer loses a defense case. They said such cases should be nipped in the bud. For this reason, they have declared a ‘no-work day’ tomorrow.
