Russian booked for trying to fly with GPS device

VASCO: Dabolim airport police have registered a case against a 60-year-old Russian national who tried to board a Russia-bound flight at Dabolim International Airport with a banned GPS device.

The accused, identified as Denis Potapaev, was found boarding a flight to Russia carrying a GPS device without permission from the competent authority. He was carrying a GPS device in his luggage, which is prohibited in handbags. It was confiscated from the passenger’s possession.

According to the police, the Civil Aviation Ministry has banned carrying of GPS devices in air travel, like satellite phones, under the provisions of the Aircraft Act read with the Aircraft (Safety) Rules.

A case has been registered against the foreign national under Section 6 (1A) of the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act 1933 and Section 20 of the Indian Telegraph Act 1885.

Head Constable Sash Ajgaonkar is conducting further investigation under the guidance of Dabolim Airport PI Amarnath Pasi and overall guidance of Mormugao DYSP Salim Shaikh.
