Gujarat: It has set up a special home for retired police dogs in Gujarat’s Anand district to provide them adequate facilities to serve them after they become incapable of working due to age or other reasons, an official said.
Assistant Superintendent of Police, J.J. Choudhary said, this special old age home is equipped with medical and indoor facilities to guarantee their comfortable stay and well-being.
“In fact, the home for the elderly, the first of its kind in the country, has 20 dogs, of which 16 are retired, two serving and two trained dogs,” he said.
Chaudhary, who is in-charge of the maintenance of the police dog, said the establishment has 23 rooms for retired members of the police dog squad and three rooms for service dogs, which provide food, medical care and a hygienic living environment. . , Home.
He said that apart from vegetables and rice, retired members of the police dog squad are given 700 grams of milk, 170 grams of bread, an egg in the morning and 280 grams of cord at night.
The sadhus are also sometimes medically examined by doctors at veterinary hospitals during the day, he said.
As per their daily routine, dogs leave their shed in the morning and night and play in the open air. They also trained them, fed them and returned them to quarters, he said.
Chaudhary said, on Saturdays, Sundays and festival days, people can get to know these dogs, spend time with them and feed them.
The retirement process involves an annual fitness test, and dogs that do not pass or suffer injuries during service are considered retired and certified as not fit.
Exposure to explosives shortens the useful life of a police dog and usually kills children between the ages of 8 and 10, officials said.
