Judicial orders will be followed at all costs: CAT tells government

The court, while hearing the contempt plea of Iftikhar Hussain Shaikh through virtual mode, said, “The time limit prayed for has been granted and it is expected that the respondent no. 1 will implement the order passed by the court in its letter and spirit.”

“If compliance with the order is not submitted, the Commissioner Secretary GAD will remain present through any available means to assist this court to maintain the rule of law. If the order is complied with in letter and spirit, the personal appearance of the officer will be deemed to have been dispensed with,” the court said and listed the matter for hearing on May 13.

The court said that the matter came before it on several occasions, with directions to file compliance reports.

The court cited various orders in which, it said, a liberal approach was adopted to give time to the contemnors to file compliance.

The tribunal held that the contemnors were also warned against taking court orders carelessly.

“It is once again reiterated that disobedience to court orders attacks the very root of the rule of law on which the judicial system rests. Judicial orders must be followed at all costs, no matter how serious the impact, the tribunal said
