Doctors closed the hole in the heart without operation

Raipur. A 40-day-old baby was very ill. He was having trouble breathing and was also losing weight. He weighed 2.75 kg at birth, but due to difficulty in eating and breathing problems, his weight had reduced to 1.8 kg. He was first taken to a hospital in Durg, but later he was referred to a children’s hospital in Raipur.

Dr. Kinjal Bakshi examined the baby and found that he had a large hole in his heart. Despite medicines, the child’s condition did not improve. Therefore, the doctors decided that the hole in the heart had to be closed. But the child was very small and could not be operated upon. Therefore, the doctors decided to close the hole in the heart in the Cath Lab without an operation.

This was a very challenging task, as the child was very small and his arteries were very small. Dr. Kinjal Bakshi, Dr. Sumanta Shekhar Padhi and Dr. Arun Andappan successfully performed this procedure by modifying appropriate instruments according to the child’s weight. The patient was shifted to the pediatric hospital the next day for nutritional rehabilitation. The child is fine now and is also gaining weight. As far as we know, this is the smallest child in terms of weight who has undergone PDA (Patent Ductus Arteriosus) procedure in Central India.
