Punjab: Nambardar suspended for burning stubble
Punjab: Moga deputy commissioner has taken a serious note of a village Nambardar burning paddy stubble in his field and ordered the suspension of the ‘erring’ village head. “His job is to stop others from burning paddy stubble in the fields, but he himself is violating the law. This is a serious offence,” Moga DC Vishesh Sarangal said. The DC said that Nambardar Sukhdev Singh of Kannian Khas village in Dharamkot has violated the orders of the Supreme Court and the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). Nambardar, also known as Lambardar, was a village head who collected taxes during the British Raj.
He was appointed under the Mahalwari system. Currently, Nambardar is appointed by the Deputy Commissioner under the Punjab Land Revenue Act. DC Moga said that Sukhdev Singh, being a responsible person of the village, has violated government orders by burning paddy stubble in his field and polluting the environment. The Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Dharamkot, directed him not to burn stubble and also make other villagers aware of the same. The suspension order has been issued under Rule 25 (i) (b) of the Punjab Land Revenue Rules.
