Mizoram Congress releases first list of candidates for Aizawl Municipal Corporation elections

Aizawl: Mizoram’s opposition Congress on Monday released the first list of its candidates for elections to the 19-member Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC), the date of which is yet to be announced by the State Election Commission.

State Congress president Lal Thanzara declared the names of 13 candidates for the upcoming municipal polls during a function marking the opening of the Congress Bhavan for the current year. The ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), the main opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) and other parties are yet to announce their candidates.

Speaking on the occasion, Lal Thanzara urged party workers to remain committed to the party and not lose morale even if it faces tough times and electoral setbacks.

He said that defeats in elections serve as a guiding force to strengthen the party in the future. The former health minister claimed that the party registered significant progress in electoral politics in 2025 compared to previous years.

He further claimed that people have begun to repose their faith in the Congress as they have lost hope under the Mizo National Front (MNF) and Zoram People’s Movement governments.

Lal Thanzara, the younger brother of former Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, announced that his party will reintroduce the New Land Use Policy (NLUP), the Congress’s flagship programme aimed at providing sustainable development to farmers and low-income groups by offering financial assistance for start-ups. The scheme was first launched in September 2011 when the Congress was in power in the state.

Meanwhile, Mizoram State Election Commissioner H. Lalthlangliana said that the poll panel is yet to announce the schedule for the AMC polls. He said the current term of the municipality will expire on March 1.

He added that officials have been making preparations since September last year and published the final electoral roll on January 7, which shows that there are over 2.39 lakh voters, including 1.29 lakh female voters, across 19 wards within the AMC jurisdiction.

In the last AMC polls held in February 2021, the MNF won a majority by bagging 11 seats, while the ZPM secured six seats and the Congress won two seats
