Kerala To Be Renamed Keralam Big Decision Before State Polls Likely Today

Keralam: The name of Kerala state will now officially change to Keralam. The Union Cabinet is likely to approve the name change proposal, which has been pending for a long time, today. Meanwhile, the Kerala Assembly has already passed several resolutions seeking the Center’s approval for the name change. In this context, reliable sources say that the proposal to change the name of Kerala will be approved in today’s cabinet meeting.

The state assembly also passed a resolution on the name change of Kerala in 2023. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan recalled in the discussion on the resolution that the name of their state was previously called ‘Keralam’ in Malayalam. The BJP has supported the Vijayan government on the issue of changing the name of the state. To this extent, the party’s state president Rajiv Chandrasekhar recently wrote a letter to the CM. Responding to that letter, the CM said, ‘The original name of the state is Keralam. But the British changed it to Kerala for their convenience. We are correcting the changes they made in accordance with the culture of the state.’

If the proposal to change the name of Kerala gets the approval of the Union Cabinet, the constitutional process will begin. According to Article 3 of the Constitution, the name of the state will have to be changed to ‘Keralaam’. These changes will have to be made in all the languages ​​mentioned in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
