Chennai Meteorological Department predicts onset of southwest monsoon by the weekend

Tamil Nadu: The Chennai Meteorological Center stated in a press release issued on Tuesday that the southwest monsoon is expected to enter southern parts of the country by the end of this week. According to the department, the monsoon could become active in the southern Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by this weekend. Signs of a shift in the weather system are also clearly visible.

The regional center of the India Meteorological Department stated that a low-pressure area formed in the southwest Bay of Bengal, near the northern coast of Sri Lanka, is now slowly moving northward. This system is expected to strengthen further on Tuesday (May 12). It is also expected to intensify further into a depression within the next 48 hours, which could lead to significant changes in regional weather.

The Meteorological Department also stated that this system could impact northern Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema, and northern interior Karnataka, extending through central Marathwada. Due to this, light rain accompanied by thunderstorms is expected at many places in the Western Ghats districts, coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal regions on Wednesday (May 13). A lightning warning has also been issued during this period.

The slight change in weather is expected to continue on Thursday (May 14). Light rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is possible at one or two places in the Western Ghats districts and South Tamil Nadu. Heavy rain is also expected at some places in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai districts, and the Karaikal region.

On Friday (May 15), light rain is expected at many places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal regions. The weather is expected to be more active, especially in the coastal districts. Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms is also expected at isolated places in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Pudukkottai districts on this day.

The Meteorological Department has appealed to people to be vigilant in view of the changing weather and to stay in safe places during lightning or heavy rain. Farmers and fishermen have also been advised to pay close attention to weather information, as conditions in the sea and coastal areas can change rapidly during the initial phase of the monsoon.

This forecast has increased the excitement about the arrival of the monsoon in South India, as it is considered crucial for agriculture and water resources.
