Tamil Nadu: Farmers stage a massive protest, demanding waiver of cooperative crop loans

Tamil Nadu: The Farmers Protection Association has announced that it will launch a major protest in the state on June 22nd in support of farmers. The association’s main demand is the complete waiver of cooperative crop loans, as promised in the election. This farmers’ protest sends a clear message to the state government that delays in implementing farm loan waivers are unacceptable.

Esan Murugasamy, founder and lawyer of the association, issued a statement saying that while newly formed governments are waiving many pending farmer loans, no concrete steps have been taken in this direction in Tamil Nadu. He noted that last week, the Maharashtra government waived loans worth ₹36,000 crore for 5.6 million farmers, providing financial relief to farmers.

In Tamil Nadu, the Victory Party had promised before the elections that cooperative crop loans for farmers with less than five acres of land would be completely waived. Additionally, a 50% loan waiver would be implemented for farmers with more than five acres of land. However, this promise has not yet been implemented, leaving farmers dissatisfied and determined to take to the streets.

Eesan Murugasamy stated that farmers are under financial pressure, and the lack of timely loan waivers could severely impact their crops and livelihoods. He urged the government to take immediate action in the interests of farmers and fulfill its election promises.

According to the association, the protests will not be limited to criticizing central or state government policies, but will also focus on safeguarding farmers’ interests and ensuring financial stability in the agricultural sector. This farmers’ protest will be conducted peacefully across the state, and dialogue with the government is expected.

Political analysts say this farmers’ protest could pose a serious challenge to the state government. If loan waivers are not implemented in a timely manner, the movement could escalate and have political implications. The recent loan waiver decision in Maharashtra clearly demonstrates the need for governments to take swift and effective action in the interests of farmers.

The Tamil Nadu Farmers Protection Association has clarified that their aim is not merely to protest, but to ensure the government’s commitment to fulfill its promises. Farmers want the loan waiver process to be transparent and quick, so that they can be relieved of financial pressures in their agricultural activities and livelihoods.

Association leaders stated that the protest, starting June 22nd, will focus the attention of farmer organizations and the general public in the state on farm loan waivers. They also stated that the movement will be peaceful, but it is imperative for the government to pay attention to the interests of farmers.
