Long traffic jam on NH-326 in Rayagada due to a broken-down truck; passengers stranded for hours.

Rayagada: Traffic on National Highway-326 in Odisha’s Rayagada district was thrown into disarray on Sunday morning when a truck broke down at a sharp bend in the middle of the road due to a technical glitch. The stalled truck completely blocked the highway, resulting in long queues of vehicles stretching out on both sides. Commuters and drivers remained stuck in the traffic jam for hours, facing significant inconvenience.
According to reports, the incident occurred in the Gumma Ghat area of Rayagada block. A truck developed a sudden technical fault; the driver lost control, and the vehicle came to a halt at a dangerous bend in the hilly ghat section. Moving the truck proved difficult due to the narrow, hilly terrain, causing a complete halt to vehicular movement on the highway within a short time.
Traffic from both directions came to a standstill after the truck became stranded on the road. Long lines of vehicles—including passenger buses, freight carriers, small vehicles, and heavy trucks—quickly formed on both sides of the highway. Many passengers were unable to reach their destinations on time and were forced to wait on the road for hours.
The traffic jam most severely affected travelers commuting between Rayagada, Koraput, and Kashipur. This route is a vital link for the region, used daily by a large number of people. The highway closure disrupted local transport services, forcing many passengers to postpone their journeys.
Commuters reported that the blockage in the ghat section left them unable to move forward or turn back. The combination of heat and the prolonged wait caused considerable hardship. Passengers on buses—particularly the elderly and children—faced significant distress.
Upon receiving information about the incident, local administration and police officials arrived at the scene. They assessed the situation and initiated efforts to clear the highway as quickly as possible. Necessary equipment and personnel were deployed to remove the truck and restore normal traffic flow. A team comprising police and administrative officials arrived at the scene and attempted to manage the flow of vehicles. They worked to clear the gridlocked traffic in an orderly manner and establish alternative arrangements. However, the relief operations took time due to the hilly terrain and the position of the truck.
Locals state that incidents involving heavy vehicles breaking down or meeting with accidents in mountainous areas like Gumma Ghat have occurred previously. They emphasize the need to strengthen traffic management and emergency response systems in such regions to prevent prolonged inconvenience to the public during disruptions.
According to experts, extra caution is required when heavy vehicles traverse hilly routes. Regular vehicle inspections, driver vigilance, and adherence to road safety regulations can significantly reduce the incidence of such events.
Sunday’s incident has once again highlighted the need for robust road safety and emergency management in hilly areas. Following prompt action by the administration, the process of restoring traffic flow was initiated. Officials reported that once the truck was removed, the stranded vehicles were cleared, and efforts were made to normalize traffic.
In the wake of the inconvenience caused to travelers, locals have demanded the assured availability of cranes and other relief equipment in these ghat sections to facilitate immediate action during future incidents. There was also an emphasis on the need for regular inspections of heavy vehicles and enhanced safety measures on mountain roads.
While traffic flow on the highway has now been restored, the incident has once again raised questions regarding the need for better administrative preparedness to handle sudden disruptions on critical highways.
