Shivakumar reached the High Court to cancel the cases registered for violation of Kovid guidelines

Bengaluru (IANS) | The Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka has approached the High Court seeking quashing of the cases registered against him for violating Covid guidelines and defying government orders during the Mekedatu Padayatra. A bench headed by Justice M Nagaprasanna on Friday adjourned the matter for a week considering separate petitions relating to eight cases in this regard.

The counsel for petitioner Shivakumar requested the court to grant time to rectify the objections of the litigants and the bench agreed and asked the counsel to make timely corrections.

Significantly, the Congress had started a 10-day padyatra under the leadership of Shivakumar from January 9, 2022, demanding the implementation of the Mekedatu project at the peak of the Kovid epidemic. Ramnagar Tehsildar and other government officials had lodged complaints in this regard at Ramnagar Rural and other police stations.

The police had filed a charge sheet on February 9, 2023 in the special court of people’s representatives. Shivakumar has sought quashing of the cases in the High Court.

Several sitting MLAs, MLCs and senior leaders of the Congress party have been named as accused persons in these cases.
