Bankipur By-election: A Test for Prashant Kishor

Patna. Today is considered a politically crucial day for Prashant Kishor, the architect of the Jan Suraaj Party. Vote counting for the by-election to the Bankipur Assembly seat has commenced, and by afternoon, it will become clear whether Prashant Kishor succeeds in this third major test of his political journey or faces defeat once again.

The Bankipur Assembly seat went to a by-election after BJP state president Nitin Navin vacated it. The contest for this seat garnered significant attention because Prashant Kishor framed it not merely as an Assembly election, but as a reflection of public sentiment against the state government and the BJP. During the campaign, he claimed that if the public defeated the BJP, the message would resonate from Bihar all the way to Delhi.

All eyes are fixed on the early trends following the start of the vote counting. The results will determine the extent of public support for the Jan Suraaj Party, which claims to offer a new alternative in Bihar politics. While Prashant Kishor has long worked with various parties and leaders as an election strategist, this marks his third major political test since entering active politics.

Previously, the Jan Suraaj Party failed to secure any seats in the November 2025 Assembly elections and the four Assembly by-elections held shortly before that. Consequently, the Bankipur election is viewed as a significant opportunity for Prashant Kishor and his party to strengthen their political foothold.

During the campaign for the Bankipur seat, Prashant Kishor consistently targeted the BJP over local issues and the state of governance. He urged voters to give a chance to a new alternative, distinct from traditional politics. He maintained that the people of Bihar desire change and that Jan Suraaj could serve as the vehicle for that transformation.

The BJP fielded Neeraj Sinha for this seat, while Rekha Gupta contested on behalf of the RJD. The primary contest was perceived to be between the BJP and Jan Suraaj, although political analysts held varying opinions regarding the RJD candidate’s prospects.

Voting in the Bankipur Assembly constituency took place on July 30. Some post-polling exit polls showed Prashant Kishor leading against BJP candidate Neeraj Sinha. The surveys claimed that a significant portion of the RJD’s vote bank could shift towards Jan Suraaj. However, the actual picture will only become clear once the vote counting is complete.

The Bankipur Assembly seat is considered one of the key constituencies in Patna city. It has a large urban electorate, and the electoral dynamics here differ from those in other regions. The BJP has long held a strong position in this constituency; therefore, a victory here would be considered a major political achievement for Prashant Kishor.

Political experts believe that the Bankipur result will not merely decide the fate of a single seat but will also signal the level of acceptance for the Jan Suraaj party. If Prashant Kishor wins, his party could gain a new identity in Bihar’s political landscape. Conversely, if the result does not go his way, it could raise fresh questions regarding the party’s organization and strategy.

Prashant Kishor sought to frame the election as a battle between the BJP and Jan Suraaj. His campaign prioritized issues such as youth, employment, education, and better governance. He maintained that the people of Bihar are ready for change and are in need of a new political alternative.

Meanwhile, the BJP contested the election relying on its robust organization and established voter base. Party leaders highlighted development works in the area and the government’s achievements as key issues. The RJD also endeavored to consolidate its traditional vote bank.

With the vote counting underway, all political parties have their eyes fixed on the outcome. The picture will gradually become clearer as early trends emerge, and the verdict of the people of Bankipur will be known by the afternoon.

A victory for the Jan Suraaj party in this election could prove to be a major turning point for Prashant Kishor in Bihar politics. At the same time, retaining this seat poses a challenge for the BJP. For now, all eyes are on the counting center, and within a few hours, the result of the Bankipur by-election could influence the political trajectory of Bihar.
