Karnataka bandh over Cauvery dispute; protest against water release.

Bengaluru. A state-wide bandh is being observed in Karnataka on Thursday over the Cauvery water-sharing dispute. Pro-Kannada groups and farmers’ organizations have called for this shutdown, urging that it be observed from 6 AM to 6 PM.
The bandh has been called in protest against the Cauvery Water Management Authority’s (CWMA) directive instructing Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu for 15 days. Following this order, various organizations and farmers in Karnataka expressed their displeasure and demanded that the government oppose the decision.
Pro-Kannada groups argue that the state is already facing a water shortage. Releasing water to Tamil Nadu at such a time goes against the interests of farmers and the general public. These organizations assert that the people of the state should have the primary right to Karnataka’s water resources.
Several organizations have planned protests and rallies during the bandh. Demonstrators are demanding the protection of the state’s interests regarding the Cauvery water dispute. Farmers’ organizations maintain that the sharing of river water should be determined based on ground realities and available water resources.
Meanwhile, the administration has appealed to the public to maintain peace. The government has stepped up security measures to ensure law and order, deploying police forces in sensitive areas to prevent any untoward incidents.
The extent to which the state-wide bandh will impact daily life remains unclear. Several essential services are likely to be exempted from the shutdown; hospitals, pharmacies, and emergency services are expected to continue operating normally.
The waters of the Cauvery River have long been a subject of dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Farmers in both states rely on Cauvery water for irrigation. The dispute tends to intensify during periods of scanty rainfall and water crises.
Organizations in Karnataka state that releasing additional water is difficult given the current status of the state’s reservoirs. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu has also been demanding water, citing the needs of its farmers.
The Cauvery Water Management Authority periodically issues directives regarding water sharing between the two states. However, these decisions often spark protests in the concerned states.
This time too, following the Authority’s order, political and social organizations in Karnataka have launched protests. Through the bandh (shutdown), these organizations aim to convey their grievances to both the state and central governments.
Political parties have also become active regarding this issue. The Cauvery dispute is considered a sensitive matter in Karnataka’s politics; the state has witnessed numerous protests over water sharing in the past as well.
The administration’s biggest challenge is to maintain law and order during the shutdown and prevent inconvenience to the general public. Officials have urged people not to heed rumors and to contact the administration in case of any emergency.
Currently, tensions remain high in Karnataka over the Cauvery water dispute.
