Celebrations of Vishwakarma Puja turned into mourning in Bhagalpur; two students drowned in a pond.
Bhagalpur. In Bihar’s Bhagalpur district, the joy of two families turned to mourning on the day of Vishwakarma Puja when two school students drowned while bathing in a pond. A pall of gloom descended on the entire area following the incident. The families of the deceased are inconsolable.
This tragic incident reportedly occurred at a pond in Kavaiya Tola, under the Sadanandpur Panchayat within the Kahalgaon police station area. According to reports, some children had gone to the pond to bathe on Thursday, the occasion of Vishwakarma Puja. During this time, two students drowned after venturing into deep water.
The deceased have been identified as 15-year-old Vibhishan Kumar, son of Giriraj Das, and 12-year-old Manish Kumar, son of Sunil Harijan; both were residents of Nandlalpur Harijan Tola. Both students were attending school and living with their families.
It is reported that while people in the vicinity were celebrating the festival in their own ways, the two students arrived at the pond to bathe. Panic ensued among the onlookers following the sudden accident. Locals attempted to rescue the students, but by the time they were pulled out, their condition had become critical.
Upon receiving news of the incident, a large number of villagers rushed to the scene and informed the police. A police team subsequently arrived, and rescue operations were initiated with the help of locals.
As soon as the families learned of the accident, they were devastated. Family members rushed to the site in a state of panic and were overcome with grief upon seeing the bodies of the children. A wave of mourning swept through the village.
According to villagers, the two students had left home just as they would on any ordinary day; no one had imagined that a festive day would bring such a tragic event for their families. The entire area is now in mourning.
The police took possession of the bodies, completed the necessary formalities, and sent them for post-mortem examinations. An investigation is underway, and details regarding the circumstances of the incident are being gathered. Locals reported that accidents have occurred at the pond in the past due to the significant depth of the water. Villagers have urged the administration to implement safety measures around such water bodies to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Water levels in ponds, rivers, and other water bodies rise during the monsoon season. Consequently, the risk of accidents increases when children venture into the water alone or without adequate safety precautions. Both the administration and local residents frequently appeal for caution.
