Crisis hits 13.6-km-long metro project in Gurugram

Gurugram. Clouds of crisis are looming over an important metro expansion project in Gurugram, Haryana. The proposed 13.6 km long metro project from Golf Course Extension Road to Sector-5 is being considered for cancellation. Haryana Metro Rail Transport Corporation (HMRTC) is reviewing the utility and future of this project. The project is to be discussed in the proposed meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi. Due to a large part of this metro line coming in the way of the proposed Namo Bharat Corridor, the plan for its construction is being reconsidered. However, the final decision to cancel the project has not been taken yet.

There was a plan for a 13.6 kilometer long metro route.

With the aim of improving the public transport system in Gurugram, a plan for a 13.6 km long metro corridor from Golf Course Extension Road to Sector-5 was prepared. Under this project, it was proposed to connect many important residential and commercial areas of the city with the metro network.

According to the plan, the metro line was to start from near Hong Kong Market located in Sector-57 near Golf Course Extension Road. After this the proposed line would proceed via RD City, Millennium City Center and IFFCO Chowk.

This metro route from IFFCO Chowk was to reach Sector-5 via Signature Tower, Maharana Pratap Chowk, Atul Kataria Chowk and Shitala Mata Road. The construction of this project was planned to provide an additional option of public transportation between different parts of the city.

Situation changed due to Namo Bharat Corridor

The main reason for reconsidering this metro project is the proposed NaMo Bharat Corridor from Gurugram to Greater Noida via Faridabad and Noida.

The route of the proposed NaMo Bharat train goes from IFFCO Chowk in Gurugram towards Golf Course Extension Road. Due to this, a major part of the proposed metro line from Golf Course Extension Road to Sector-5 is falling on the same route with the NaMo Bharat Corridor.

According to the information, about 7.1 km long stretch falls along the proposed Namo Bharat Corridor. In such a situation, the route and utility of both the projects are being reviewed.

The question facing officials is how to proceed with plans for two separate rail-based public transportation systems on the same route.

Only 6.4 kilometer stretch will be left

If the portion along the Namo Bharat corridor is removed from the proposed metro plan, only about 6.4 km long stretch from IFFCO Chowk to Sector-5 will be left.

This route is proposed from IFFCO Chowk to Sector-5 via Shitala Mata Road. Authorities are having to reconsider the utility of pursuing a separate metro project for such a small portion.

For this reason, HMRTC is considering the option of canceling the entire proposed metro corridor. However, the final decision will emerge only after a review headed by the Chief Secretary.

The responsibility of DPR was handed over to RITES

RITES was entrusted with the responsibility of preparing the detailed project report (DPR) for this metro project.

The technical feasibility, route, possible construction requirements and other important aspects of the proposed metro line were to be studied through the DPR.

But now due to the planning of Namo Bharat Corridor, questions have been raised on the usefulness of the proposed route. In such a situation, HMRTC is reviewing the relevant aspects before deciding the future direction of the project.

Despite the possibility of cancellation of the project, its formal closure has not been announced yet.

Interchange station was to be built in Sector-5

An important part of the proposed metro project was to create an interchange station in Sector-5.

As per the plan, the metro line coming from Golf Course Extension Road was to be connected to the Old Gurugram Metro project in Sector-5.

This could provide passengers the facility to travel between different metro corridors. There would be an option for passengers to travel by changing metro between different parts of the city.

Now considering the cancellation of the proposed line, the original plan of this interchange may also be affected. However, no official announcement of any revised arrangement has been made in this regard yet.

Work on other metro projects in Gurugram also

Other metro projects are also being worked on to expand public transport facilities in Gurugram.

Haryana Government has approved the revised cost and related proposals of Metro Connectivity Project from Millennium City Center to Cyber City. Along with this, a plan has also been prepared for the proposed metro link from Sector-5 to Gurugram Railway Station.

In May 2026, the state Cabinet had approved a proposal to increase the revised cost of the Gurugram Metro project from Rs 5,452.72 crore to Rs 10,266.54 crore.

Apart from this, work is also being progressed on the 35.25 km long proposed metro corridor from Sector-56 to Panchgaon. 28 stations are proposed on this route.

The decision will be taken in the meeting of the Chief Secretary

The future of the proposed metro project from Golf Course Extension Road to Sector-5 will now depend on the review of HMRTC.

The meeting, to be chaired by Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi, will discuss the route of the project, its parallel stretches along the NaMo Bharat Corridor and
