Modi surname defamation case, Rahul Gandhi petitioned the Supreme Court to stay the sentence
New Delhi. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi challenged the decision of the High Court in the Supreme Court. He has demanded a stay on punishment and conviction. The High Court had dismissed Rahul Gandhi’s review petition in the first week of this month. The Gujarat High Court had said that the order of the trial court is correct. There is no need to interfere with this order, therefore the application is dismissed. Rahul Gandhi had said at an election rally in Kolar, Karnataka on 13 April 2019, “Why is the surname of Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi common? Why do all thieves have Modi as their surname?” BJP MLA and former minister Purnesh Modi had filed a criminal defamation case against him under section 499, 500 regarding this statement of Rahul. In his complaint, the BJP MLA had alleged that while addressing an election rally in 2019, Rahul defamed the entire Modi community by allegedly saying why all thieves have the surname Modi?
