Study committee submits report to ban polygamy in Assam

Guwahati (IANS). Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the expert committee constituted by the state government to study the ban on polygamy in Assam submitted its report on Sunday.

Sarma tweeted, “The expert committee constituted to examine the legislative capacity of the state legislature to enact a law to end polygamy in Assam submitted its report today. Assam is now closer to creating a positive environment for women empowerment, regardless of caste, creed or religion.

The expert committee was headed by Justice (Retd) Rumi Kumari Phukan. Apart from Phukan, the committee included Advocate General of Assam Devjit Saikia, BJP leader Nalin Kohli and another senior Gauhati High Court lawyer Nekibur Zaman.

Earlier, Sarma had said that the ban on polygamy in Assam would be imposed before 2024. He had said that a committee has been constituted to study various aspects of banning polygamy in the state and it will submit its report soon.

The expert committee was given three months time to submit its report. Since the report has now been placed before the chief minister, the state government may take steps to bring a law banning polygamy in Assam in the next assembly session.
