Suspected ULFA-I linkman shot dead by Assam Police

Guwahati (IANS). A suspected linkman of the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) was shot dead by police in Assam’s Sivasagar district while trying to escape from custody.

However, the accused’s father Raju Ahmed, claiming a police conspiracy, said that his son had no links with the banned terrorist organisation.

The accused Ahmed was allegedly extorting money from local businessmen and others in the guise of ULFA-I. The police caught him on August 12 from the Demo area of the district.

Sivasagar police officer said that we have received information that he was using the name of ULFA-I to extort money from local traders. Due to which he was taken into custody.

Police said that after being taken into custody as part of the investigation, Ahmed was taken to several places.

Assam Police spokesperson Prashant Kumar Bhuiyan said that on Tuesday midnight he tried to escape from the Demo police station by attacking the officers and our officers fired at him in defence.

The police then took Ahmed to a nearby government hospital. Several bullets hit the lower half of his body.

According to sources, the police have registered a fresh complaint against him for assaulting the officers on duty and trying to escape from jail.

Meanwhile, Ahmed’s father claimed that his son was innocent and was set up as an ULFA-I linkman.

On Wednesday, he told reporters that police had brought Ahmed to his home for questioning on August 12, just after his arrest. He claimed that five policemen, including the circle inspector and the VDP secretary, arrived that day. However, one person, Raju Phukan, who was not a police officer, accompanied them.

Ahmed’s father also said that Phukan came and sat down beside his son, took out a paper from his pocket and casually placed it next to him before the police investigation began.

According to the memorandum, Ahmed demanded Rs 20 lakh from Shashant Borgohain on behalf of ULFA-I.

The police took it as evidence. But, ignore Phukan’s behavior. This is suspicious as he has ignored Phukan’s wrongdoings and yet allowed him to join the investigation. My son has been framed.

However, the police refuted the claims of the father of the accused and said that they have arrested him with sufficient evidence and more interrogation is on.
