As lawyers we must stand against injustice: CJI Chandrachud

Bengaluru (IANS). Chief Justice of India Dr. D.Y. “As lawyers, we must make sure to stand up against discrimination and injustice,” Chandrachud said on Saturday.

Addressing the 31st Annual Convocation of the prestigious National Law School of India (NSILU) University in Bengaluru, the Chief Justice said that he was told that a young law student who had gone for an internship in a law office was asked if his What is caste, and when he told he was asked not to come back.

He said, “It filled me with despair. As lawyers, we must make sure to stand up against discrimination and injustice. We have to ensure that the constitutional values are followed and this shows that some lawyers are violating the law far from upholding the constitutional values.

CJI Chandrachud said, “The Supreme Court is currently engaged in fundamental constitutional issues. We have released a booklet on gender stereotyping. The new graduates will drive the change. It’s a learning process for us.”

He told that a lot needs to be done. Cornelia Sorabjee, India’s first woman lawyer, was not allowed to argue in court unless she was accompanied by a male lawyer. These stories are not ones we can leave in our history books.

CJI Chandrachud pointed out, “Last year, four out of five law clerks were women. It is common for them to call me and say sir, I have menstrual cramps. I tell them please work from home and take care of your health. We also told you in the Supreme Court about sanitary napkin dispensers in women’s toilets.”

She underlined, “If being a good person and being a good lawyer comes at some point, I urge you to be a good person. The profession of law is slowly becoming a starting point for the entry of more and more women lawyers. Used to be.”

The CJI insisted, “Never kick the ladder that took you up in this journey of life.”
