Lockie Ferguson will captain New Zealand for the ODI series against Bangladesh

Auckland (IANS). New Zealand Cricket (NZC) on Saturday said fast bowler Lockie Ferguson will captain New Zealand for the first time in international cricket during the upcoming three-match ODI series against Bangladesh in Dhaka.

Ferguson, who led the team in the recent England tour matches, will captain the side in the absence of regular ODI skipper Kane Williamson as he recovers from a right knee injury, and his deputy Tom Latham, who is the ICC Cricket World Cup captain. Will not be able to play in the series due to spending time at home before the Cup and Test tour of Bangladesh. ,

“Lockie is an experienced bowler at the international level, and this is an opportunity for him to lead from the front, not only with the bowling group but with the entire team,” head coach Gary Stead said in a statement. He stepped into the role for practice matches in England and led a group with many moving parts.

Along with Latham, Devon Conway, Matt Henry, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner and Tim Southee will not play in the ODI series against Bangladesh.

NZC said the regular players have been given a short break to concentrate and prepare for the ODI World Cup tournament, for which they will assemble just 12 days after the start of the Bangladesh series.

Due to the need to manage the players’ workload, the team consists of an experienced core including five players from the 2019 Men’s ODI World Cup squad and a group of players new to ODI cricket.

“From now until the end of the Pakistan tour in April, which also includes the World Cup and the start of the new World Test Championship cycle, we have a very full schedule, so trying to keep the players and staff fresh and ready at the right time Doing is paramount. ,

“Balancing the workload also provides opportunities and it is exciting to have different players in the group and learn in an environment like Bangladesh,” Stead said. “It can be a challenging place to visit and it will be important to quickly acclimatise to the different conditions over the next few months.”

NZC also said that Mark Chapman and Jimmy Neesham were not considered for selection because the tour coincided with or shortly after the birth of their first children respectively.

The absence of several regular players means Dean Foxcroft has earned his first selection in the New Zealand ODI squad since his T20 debut against the UAE last month.

“It’s exciting whenever a player is selected for the first time and Dean showed just how much talent he has as he finished as the Vols’ leading white-ball run scorer last summer. “We have been impressed with the way he has come into the group with the T20 team and it will be another great opportunity for him to continue learning in our environment,” Stead said.

Three ODI matches between New Zealand and Bangladesh will be held on September 21, 23 and 26 and then the teams will come to India for the Men’s ODI World Cup to be held from October 5 to November 19.

Regular batting coach Luke Ronchi will lead the coaching group as head coach in Bangladesh, while Shane Jurgensen will continue in his usual role as bowling coach and Ian Bell will remain as batting coach from the ODI series against England.

New Zealand ODI squad: Lockie Ferguson (captain), Finn Allen, Tom Blundell, Trent Boult, Chad Bowes, Dane Cleaver, Dean Foxcroft, Kyle Jamieson, Cole McConchie, Adam Milne, Henry Nicholls, Rachin Ravindra, Ish Sodhi, Blair Tickner, Will Young
