Singapore: Tharman Shanmugaratnam was sworn in as the country’s ninth President at the Istana, the presidential palace in Singapore. In inauguration remarks Thursday evening, Thurman said he was honored and humbled to be elected and would discharge his duties faithfully. The President also stressed the need to build a more inclusive society and deepen Singapore’s partnerships with the international community, Xinhua news agency reported. Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong congratulated Thurman on winning the presidential election and promised him the government’s full support. Thurman was elected president after receiving 70.4 percent of the total votes. He has also been a senior minister and deputy prime minister of Singapore.
