This is how you can please your ancestors while staying abroad, make custard apple kheer as a sweet dish.

Pratipada from the full moon and new moon of Bhadrapada to Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month is called Pitru Paksha. This year Pitru Paksha will start from 29th September and continue till 14th October 2023. In Pitru Paksha, people worship and remember their ancestors. Along with this, their favorite things are prepared during that time. Onion and garlic are not consumed at all during Shraddha. Puri and kheer are especially made during this period.
It may be difficult for people living abroad to perform Shraddha, but you can please your ancestors even while staying abroad. If you want to make something new and tasty, then try making custard apple kheer for them. Custard Apple is known as Sharifa and Sitaphal in Hindi. Some people also make Basundi from it. Its kheer is also very much liked. Let us tell you how you can make it while living abroad. Also know some easy tips from mom.
Ingredients required to make custard apple kheer-
3-4 custard apple/custard apple
3 tbsp milkmaid
1/4 cup khoya
1/4 tsp cardamom powder
2 cups full cream milk
1 tbsp almonds
1 tbsp pistachios
1 tbsp cashew nuts
1 tablespoon raisins
Method of making custard apple kheer-
First of all, put cashews, almonds, pistachios and raisins in a pan and fry them on low flame. Keep in mind that these should not burn at all, they should just turn golden in colour.
Now add milk in it, mix it well and let it cook till the milk boils. Keep the flame low and keep cooking until the milk reduces to half.
Now wash and peel the custard apple or custard apple and take out its pulp separately. Mash it well with the help of a spoon.
Add milkmaid and custard apple to the milk, mix well and let it cook for 3-4 minutes.
Now add khoya and cardamom powder and let it boil. Then cook it on low flame for 1-2 more minutes.
When the kheer starts appearing thick, turn off the gas and let it cool. Your custard apple kheer is ready. Dedicate it to your ancestors.
Learn mom’s tips to make custard apple kheer
Always use full cream milk to make kheer. It helps in thickening the milk.
If you want to enhance the taste, then fry the dry fruits separately in some ghee. After that mix in kheer.
While boiling or cooking milk, do not keep it on high flame. Due to this the cream of milk starts curdling. Always cook milk on low flame.
If you are having difficulty in extracting the custard apple pulp (tips for buying custard apple), then first cut it from the middle and then take out the pulp with a spoon.
Some people also roast custard apple in ghee and then add it to milk. If you want, you can do this. This will improve the taste and also reduce the smell of custard apple.
