Bengal policemen involved in drug trafficking: two suspended, three dismissed

Kolkata. A sub-inspector and a driver of the Government Railway Police (GRP) Shalimar station in West Bengal’s Howrah district have been suspended after preliminary investigation revealed their involvement in drug smuggling, the same GRP attached to the police station said. The services of three civic volunteers have been terminated.
The crux of the case was the arrest of Mohammad Raza, a smuggler, who was caught red-handed with 159 bottles of drug-laced cough syrup in early September.
During interrogation, Raza named one of the three civilian volunteers who worked as associates in the racket. After this the Civic Volunteer took the names of Sub-Inspector, Driver and other Civic Volunteers.
A GRP official said, “A thorough departmental inquiry has been initiated against the five people whose names have cropped up in the case. “The preliminary investigation revealed that the allegations against them had prima facie merit, following which the sub-inspector and the driver were suspended and the civic volunteers were dismissed.” (IANS)
