Good news for farmers, Modi government made this big announcement
New Delhi: The central government announced to increase the minimum support price (MSP) of wheat by Rs 150 to Rs 2,275 per quintal for the marketing season 2024-25. The government has taken this step before the assembly elections in major wheat producing states. This is the biggest increase in MSP made by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government after coming to power in 2014.
The decision to increase the MSP of wheat was taken in the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The minimum support price of wheat for the marketing season 2023-24 (April-March) is Rs 2,125 per quintal. Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said after the CCEA meeting that the Cabinet has approved increasing the MSP of all Rabi crops for the 2024-25 session.
He said, “Based on the recommendation of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP), we have increased the MSP of six Rabi crops. “The MSP of wheat has been increased by Rs 150 per quintal.” Union Minister Anurag Thakur said that the support price of wheat has been increased to Rs 2275 per quintal for the 2024-25 marketing season, which was Rs 2,125 per quintal in 2023-24.
Main Rabi crop: Wheat is the main Rabi (winter) crop, sowing of which starts in October, while harvesting takes place in April. MSP is the minimum rate ensured to protect the interests of farmers, below which grains are not purchased by government procurement agencies.
