Ground subsidence in ECL mine, three injured
Kolkata: For the second time in a week, an incident of ground subsidence in a coal mine of Eastern Coalfield Limited (ECL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL), has come to light on Thursday. This time the accident took place in Andal in West Burdwan district of West Bengal in which three people were injured.
Three persons, including an ECL superintendent, were seriously injured and admitted to a local hospital where they are undergoing treatment.
The incident of land subsidence took place in ECL’s North Jambad Colliery located in Andal. The three injured have been identified as ECL supervisor Saddam Mohanty and mine workers Manoj Kumar Bhunia and Asustoh Maji.
After the incident, coal mine workers and local people protested near the mine. He alleged that the three persons remained trapped for a long time and the authorities did not take immediate action to rescue them and take them to the hospital.
He alleged that due to the lax attitude of the authorities regarding safety, accidents related to landslides are continuously happening in ECL mines.
Three people had died following a similar incident of land subsidence at ECL’s Narayankuri mine in Raniganj in the state’s West Burdwan district on October 12. Although the local police has officially put the death toll at three, local BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul has claimed the figure to be at least seven.
