Heavy rain in Kanyakumari, crack in Puthanar canal
Kanyakumari (ANI): Due to heavy rains and storm in Kanyakumari district, Puthanar canal suddenly cracked near Thuckale on Monday.
A district official said that people living in the flood affected area have been evacuated safely. While rainfall in Kanyakumari district had reduced over the past two days, on Monday afternoon there was heavy rain coupled with storm across the district including Thuckalay, Thiruvattar, Kulasekaram, Marthandam and Nagercoil, leading to flooding of channels.
As a result, a gap appeared in the Puthanar canal between Talakadu and Panapakkam areas. Due to the rains, rubber plantations were inundated and five houses were inundated in Talakadu Junction area and Panapakkam area of Kanyakumari district.
On receiving the information, Kalkulam Tehsildar Kannan and Assistant Collector Kalasik reached the spot and took action to evacuate the people safely. Firefighters immediately reached the spot and rescued people and took them to a safe place. Due to security reasons, release of water in the dams has been stopped. People traveling towards Twin Valley Colony have been affected due to this violation.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Minister Mano Thangaraj directed the Public Works Department to immediately carry out repair work on the crack. “The false news is being spread that 300 houses were submerged due to the bursting of the Puthanaru canal in Tallakadu in Kanyakumari district,” said Kaushik, sub-collector of Padmanabhapuram in Kanyakumari district.
He said, “12 people living in three houses near the dam were rescued. Eviction actions have been taken and tax officials are monitoring residential areas. “It is flooded here and agricultural land is flooded.”
