Delhi court gave instructions to jail officials
New Delhi. A Delhi court on Friday extended the judicial custody of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh till November 10 in a money laundering case related to the state’s old excise policy. The Enforcement Directorate, which is investigating the case, arrested Rouse Avenue Court Special Judge M.K. after the expiry of the 14-day judicial custody granted earlier. Singh was presented before Nagpal. Judge Nagpal allowed Singh to sign some checks to meet his family expenses and to carry out other work required as a Member of Parliament. He had requested for this.
The jail authorities concerned were directed to ensure proper treatment of Singh, including by his personal doctor. The judge said, “The court sees no reason to deny personal treatment to the accused. Therefore, the concerned Jail Superintendent is directed to ensure proper treatment.” Judge Nagpal extended the judicial custody of the AAP leader by 14 days. Singh had moved the Delhi High Court against his arrest and remand, but the court did not give him any relief. Justice Swarn Kanta Sharma rejected his petition terming it premature.
Singh had told Justice Nagpal on October 13 that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had become an ‘entertainment department’. The judge had directed him not to discuss unrelated matters or make speeches inside the court, otherwise he would ask for his appearance through video conferencing from now on. Singh had challenged his arrest and remand by the ED before the High Court, saying the financial probe agency had not informed him of the grounds for the arrest. The court had earlier also directed Singh not to talk to the media during his appearance, saying it created security problems. The judge also instructed the journalists not to ask him questions. The financial probe agency arrested Singh after conducting searches at his residence in North Avenue area on October 4. Singh was arrested under sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA)
