Sultan named new king of Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian state-news agency Bernama said Sultan Ibrahim will be officially installed as king on January 31, 2024, replacing his predecessor Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah. Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, the fifth sultan of Johor state, was named Malaysia’s 15th king by the country’s conference of rulers on Friday, state media reported.

Born in 1958, Ibrahim has ruled Johor state, bordering Singapore, since 2010, Xinhua news agency reported.

He has spoken about the need to keep Malaysia an open trading nation.

The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, has also been elected as the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong for the same five-year term.

Malaysia is a constitutional monarchy, with nine sultans, or rulers, who are their respective heads of state and act as religious leaders, and serve as kings for rotating five-year terms. Are.
