Landslides caused by heavy rains in many districts of Tamil Nadu
Chennai: Due to continuous heavy rains for the last few days, landslides and waterlogging have occurred in many districts of Tamil Nadu. A landslide occurred on a road near Kunjappa-Panai in Coimbatore as heavy rains continued in the area. Similarly, a landslide occurred on the Mettupalayam Highway in Kotagiri Mettupalayam, causing landslides and uprooting of trees. A landslide also occurred at the third turn from Kotagiri towards Mettupalayam in the area under Mettupalayam. This disrupted traffic. At present, Mettupalayam police, fire department and highway department are busy in removing the mud and trees that have fallen on the road.
Police are sending vehicles going from Kotagiri to Mettupalayam via Coonoor. Due to heavy rain in Lower Kothagiri, NMR Mountain Train No. 06136 Mettupalayam – Udagamandalam train and Train No. 06137 Udagamandalam – Mettupalayam train are canceled today (09.11.2023).
School holiday was declared in many districts of Tamil Nadu on Thursday due to heavy rains in the state. Schools in Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Dindigul and Madurai will remain closed as per orders issued by the respective district magistrates.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), scattered heavy rainfall is likely to continue over Tamil Nadu on November 9, after which it will reduce significantly.
