A seven-hour surgery saved a severed hand

Hyderabad: Doctors at Medicover Hospitals, Sangeeth, Secunderabad, successfully performed a complex microsurgical replantation of a patient’s almost completely severed left forearm, saving the hand after a severe injury.

The patient, Mallesh, arrived at the emergency department with his forearm nearly severed, held together only by a small soft tissue bridge. The injury completely damaged major blood vessels, nerves, tendons, and bones in both hands.

The trauma surgery team, comprising specialists in plastic surgery and orthopedics, immediately performed an emergency surgery that lasted approximately seven hours. The procedure included stabilizing the bone with plates, repairing the ulnar artery and nerves to restore blood flow, reconstructing the tendon, and performing precise nerve repair.

Following the surgery, the patient showed good signs of recovery, including warming of the hand and good capillary refill, indicating successful restoration of blood circulation. Dr. K. Abhinav Kumar, the plastic surgeon who performed the surgery, said he is currently stable and is being closely monitored, and will gradually undergo rehabilitation and physiotherapy.
