Admission in first class will be done only at the age of 6 years

Shimla. In all government and private schools of Himachal, admission will be done in first class only after completion of 6 years of age. The state cabinet had taken this decision in its meeting held a few days ago. Now Education Secretary Rakesh Kanwar has issued orders to implement this decision from the academic session 2024-25.

These instructions have been given to the Director of Elementary Education Department by Tulika Sharma, Deputy Secretary of Elementary Education, on Friday.
It has been said in this letter that this amendment in the age of admission is as per the provisions of the National Education Policy 2020. What is happening now is that there is no uniformity in the age of admission in first class in government and private schools. Due to this, age difference is seen even during children’s competitions and board classes.

That is why now according to the National Education Policy, a provision is being made that admission in first class will be given only when the child is above 6 years of age. This provision will be fully implemented from the education session 2024-25 and the age of children should be 6 years plus as on 31st March of the concerned year.

Children born on April 1st will also be admitted to schools on this date. This decision of the state government will bring major changes in elementary education. Along with government schools, private schools will also have to implement the same format. This responsibility will be of the Director of Elementary Education Department. It is noteworthy that this matter was taken up for discussion in the cabinet meeting held this month and this decision was recorded. Now the Elementary Education Department has issued orders to implement this decision.
