Tamil Nadu: Students begin strike in government schools

Tamil Nadu: School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh inaugurated the student recruitment drive for the upcoming academic year (2026-2027) in Tamil Nadu government schools.
The Tamil Nadu School Education Department operates 37,554 government schools, enrolling approximately 5.2 million students. Typically, the student season in government schools begins in June, after the summer holidays.
To increase student enrollment, student enrollment is being advanced from 2024, starting in March. Accordingly, student enrollment for the upcoming academic year began on Monday.
Minister Anbil Mahesh inaugurated the first-grade student welfare program at a government-aided school in Saidapet, Chennai. He distributed welfare items to newborns.

Department Secretary P. Chandra Mohan, Director S. Kannappan, and Primary Education Director P.A. Naresh were present at the event. Similarly, officials reported that hundreds of children have registered for school in other parts of Tamil Nadu, including Coimbatore, Madurai, and Trichy. Furthermore, steps are being taken to enroll children over the age of 5 who complete preschool education at Anganwadi centers in nearby government schools, with a target of enrolling 500,000 children this year.
