Artists are working hard for their Diwali supplies
Amulpur: With the festival of lights approaching, artists making earthen lamps of different shapes and sizes are working very hard to compete with as many products as possible before the festival of lights. Artists from Tamulpur along with the rest of the state are working day and night to prepare these items to be sold in the Diwali market.
The festival of lights, Diwali, is now less than a week away and preparations for this upcoming festival are in full swing. Vendors of lights, sweets, clothes and gifts are busy for the upcoming festival, but more than that, the artisans making earthen lamps are busy with their work, as this is their busiest part of the year.
The people of Palbasti village in Binuapur area of Tamulpur district are mainly engaged in making different types of pottery. The men and women of the village are now working tirelessly to complete as many earthen lamps as possible. Endless rows of earthen lamps of different sizes and shapes are in various stages of preparation. While some people are busy preparing these, some others are busy drying and heating them, while others are busy counting and packing these items. The artisans are also engaged in the production of a variety of other clay materials required for religious and other purposes.
It is known that 10-15 families of the village have been engaged in this field of work since the time of their great grandfathers and they are carrying forward this tradition. However, the artisans noted that the rise in prices of a particular clay required to make these pottery has made it difficult for them to survive in the region, yet they continue to carry on the traditions of their great-grandfathers .
