Arunachal: Hardcore ULFA-I cadre surrenders in Khonsa
Dibrugarh: A hardcore cadre of the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) (ULFA-I) surrendered before security forces in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap district on Tuesday.
The insurgent, identified as 31-year-old Bitul Baruah, a self-styled second lieutenant of the ULFA-I faction, laid down arms in Khonsa.
Acting on credible intelligence inputs about the presence of a hardcore ULFA-I militant in the Horu Chinghan area, the Khonsa Battalion of the Assam Rifles launched a focused operation from COB Noglo.
On reaching the suspected location, security personnel activated their sources and established contact with the insurgent, persuading him to surrender. Officials said sustained pressure and persistent negotiations prompted Baruah to shun violence and return to the mainstream.
“The efforts yielded a positive response, and the insurgent agreed to surrender,” an official stated.
Security forces subsequently took him into custody at COB Noglo. During the surrender, personnel recovered one .40 calibre pistol with a magazine and two live rounds of .40 calibre ammunition.
Officials said the successful surrender highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-based operations and the humane, persuasive approach adopted by the Khonsa Battalion of the Assam Rifles.
The force reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace, security, and stability in the region and said it will continue to encourage misguided youths to return to the mainstream.
