Arunachal Pradesh: Steel Bridge Over Siang, Crucial for Armed Forces, Collapsed
ITANAGAR: Due to the collapse of the steel bridge over Siang on June 19 and the ensuing strong and persistent rain that led to landslides close to the bridge, Tuting, the administrative centre of the Upper Siang district of Arunachal, which borders China, is now shut off from the rest of the nation.
It will take several days to rebuild this bridge, which connects the far-flung Tuting and Gelling towns, which are located at an elevation of 4000 feet above sea level and are 30 kilometres from the Indo-Chinese border.
This bridge was essential for the transit of the military and their large vehicles.
On June 15, in Arunachal Pradesh, a landslide brought on by relentless rain is wrecking havoc in many districts, including the capital city where National Highway (NH) 13 is closed.
Currently, Potin-Possa route is dealing with the effects of a devastating landslip brought on by intense monsoon rain, which has rendered a key route completely impassable. The natural calamity has disrupted daily life to a great extent, leaving commuters and travellers stranded and posing tough problems for the neighbourhood.
The crucial route was entirely blocked by a large landslip that was caused by the torrential downpour and the unstable terrain. Vehicles couldn’t pass through the impacted stretch because of the sheer volume of debris and muck that the landslip brought down.
Although there are both people and machinery at the site, efforts to speed up the restoration process are under way. However, due to the unpredictable nature of landslides and continued monsoon rainfall, a thorough assessment and cleanup procedure is taking time.
In January 2023, from a key bridge in Arunachal Pradesh, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday inaugurated 28 important projects, most of which were bordering the Chinese border.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) completed these projects at a cost of 724 crore, including 12 in the Union Territories of Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir, five in Arunachal Pradesh, three each in Sikkim, Punjab, and Uttarakhand, and two in Rajasthan.
