As rural migrants flock to cities in search of employment, a surge of daily wage labourers swells in Kalaburagi.
Karnataka: In Kalaburagi district, a large number of rural laborers are heading to the city every day in search of employment. These laborers leave their villages before sunrise and arrive in the city in search of livelihood, where they often have to wait for hours to find work. However, the recent surge in the number of laborers has posed a new challenge for them.
Lakshmi is one of those laborers who leaves her home every day at around 6 a.m. She heads towards Kalaburagi city with about 40 other villagers from nearby villages. After a journey of about two hours, the group reaches the areas in the city where daily wage laborers gather daily, hoping to find work.
Large numbers of laborers gather at these places from early morning. Some wait for contractors looking for laborers for construction work, while others hope for work on houses or other odd jobs. However, it is not necessary that everyone finds work every day.
Workers say that the number of people coming in search of work has increased by almost 50 percent in the past month. Due to the increased crowds, more people are being forced to return empty-handed than before.
According to rural workers, the lack of adequate employment opportunities in villages forces them to move to cities. Families dependent on agriculture often need additional income due to weather, crop conditions, and limited income. In such circumstances, daily wage labor becomes a vital source of income for them.
Many women workers like Lakshmi are also now migrating to cities to find work. They support their families financially through construction work, domestic work, cleaning, portering, and other temporary jobs. However, the uncertainty of work remains their biggest concern.
Workers say that while there used to be a greater chance of finding work if they arrived in the morning, the increased number of workers has increased competition. Contractors often hire only a limited number of people, leaving the remaining workers disappointed.
A laborer explained that sometimes, even after waiting all day, they don’t find work. This wastes both travel expenses and time. Despite this, they return to the city the next day in the hope of finding employment, as earning money is essential to support their families.
According to local laborers, while construction activities and small and large jobs remain in demand in Kalaburagi, employment opportunities are insufficient compared to the number of laborers. This has led to long queues of daily wage laborers appearing in many areas of the city early in the morning.
Experts believe that sustainable employment opportunities need to be increased in rural areas so that people are not forced to travel long distances to cities every day to find work. This problem can be mitigated by effectively implementing rural employment schemes and creating new employment opportunities locally.
The increasing influx of laborers in cities like Kalaburagi not only reflects the employment problem but also highlights the challenges of the rural economy. When sources of income in villages are limited, people migrate to cities in the hope of better earnings.
Workers say they are struggling to somehow support themselves and their families. Every morning brings them a new hope that perhaps they will find work today and not have to return home empty-handed.
But due to increasing congestion and limited opportunities, this hope is not fulfilled every day. Now, workers are waiting for local employment opportunities to increase so that they do not have to travel long distances to the city every day to look for work.
Currently, the crowds of workers gathering on the streets and intersections of Kalaburagi in the morning indicate that migration from rural areas to cities in search of employment is continuing. The challenge for the government and administration is to provide these workers with permanent and respectable employment opportunities.
