Assam Chief Minister says that migration from across the border is changing the demographic landscape

Guwahati Scam: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma warned on Monday that unchecked illegal immigration from Bangladesh is a serious challenge and security threat, claiming that Assam could face a grave territorial threat if this trend continues.

Speaking after an official event, Sarma said that approximately 40 percent of Assam’s population is of Bangladeshi origin and warned that a further increase could alter the state’s political and geographical landscape.

“If this figure increases by another 10 percent, Assam will be lost. I have been raising this issue consistently for the last five years,” he said.

The Chief Minister also stated that if New Delhi attempts to destabilize Bangladesh, it could lead to the secession of India’s northeastern states and the rise of radical forces.

He also symbolically pointed out the vulnerability of the Siliguri Corridor, commonly known as the Chicken’s Neck, which connects the region to the rest of India.

Sarma emphasized the direct impact on Assam’s identity, political stability, and national security, and stressed the need for stringent measures to protect the state’s constitutional and territorial integrity.
