Assam Police Seize 18,000 Yaba Tablets Worth Rs 2 Crore; Apprehend Drug Peddler
Assam Police apprehended a drug peddler, Azad Uddin Barlaskar (31), in Cachar District, on September 24. They also seized a large quantity of contraband from his possession during the arrest. Acting on specific intelligence input, the police intercepted a vehicle on the Banskandi-Silchar road. The subsequent search led to the discovery of an astonishing 18,000 Yaba tablets hidden within the vehicle. Cachar Superintendent of Police, Numal Mahatta, lauded the operation, revealing that the estimated value of the seized contraband drugs stands at an astounding Rs 2 crore.
“During the search, the police team recovered and seized 18,000 Yaba tablets from the vehicle and arrested one drug peddler in Cachar district. The market value of the seized drugs is estimated at around Rs 2 crore,” SP Mahatta said.
The Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police has made significant progress in their ongoing investigation. On Saturday, September 23, they successfully apprehended six drug peddlers and confiscated 46 grams of heroin in the Khanapara area of Guwahati. The individuals taken into custody were identified as Sanjay Biswa (28), Avtar Singh (30), Shyamal Pegu (19), Bikash Ali (23), Nayan Talukdar (28), and Yuvraj Kalyan (24). Deputy Inspector General (STF) of Police, Partha Sarathi Mahanta, stated, “Acting upon a source input on a probable drugs consignment, an operation was launched by STF Assam on Saturday in Guwahati to foil the criminal act by apprehending the persons involved.”
He added, “Accordingly, the team of STF Assam caught hold of a team of six drug peddlers along with 46 grams of heroin concealed in 33 numbers of vials from their possession at Khanapara, Guwahati.”
The retrieved contraband and the six detained drug peddlers were transferred to the Basistha police station. This step was taken to kickstart the essential legal proceedings, including the formal registration of a case. Meanwhile, in Karimganj district on September 15, another operation proved equally successful.
Acting on a tip-off, the district police intercepted a vehicle in the Badarpur area. Superintendent of Police for Karimganj district, Partha Pratim Das, explained the background, stating, “We received information that a vehicle carrying a narcotics substance was coming from Mizoram side. Accordingly, we intercepted the vehicle. During a search, we recovered 40,000 Yaba tablets from a secret chamber of the vehicle. We have arrested two persons, namely Kamrul Islam and Sanjay Suklabaidya.” The arrested individuals had reportedly intended to transport the confiscated drugs to Guwahati.
These recent successes are indicative of Assam Police’s efforts to combat the drug trade plaguing the region. The recovered narcotics total 58,000 Yaba tablets.
