Assam: Priyanka Gandhi accuses Himanta Biswa Sarma of ‘politics of polarisation’

Guwahati: Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday launched a sharp attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing the ruling establishment of pursuing “politics of polarisation” by targeting Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his family.

Addressing reporters, Gandhi drew a distinction between what she described as two types of leadership. “There are two types of leaders — those with a positive mindset and those who believe in polarisation and attacking people,” she said, alleging that the continued criticism of Gogoi stemmed from political insecurity rather than substantive debate.

“The way Gaurav ji and his family are being targeted proves that this kind of politics is wrong. I think the people of Assam understand that the other side is rattled by him. That is why all this is happening,” she said. Describing the attacks as a reflection of Gogoi’s political standing, she added, “If he is being targeted, it is because he is walking on the right path. In a way, it becomes a badge of honour.”

Shifting her focus to governance, Gandhi urged the Chief Minister to foreground development issues. “You should tell the CM to speak about the development of Assam and what he has done for the state,” she said, calling for the political discourse to centre on performance in office rather than personal allegations.

Gandhi also struck a sombre note while referring to the death of Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg, cautioning against any attempt to politicise the matter. “We should never take political advantage of such things. Zubeen was the voice of the soul of Assam. Our fight is to protect Assam’s culture and heritage. No one should use him for political gains,” she said.

Recalling his cultural influence, she added, “People were deeply connected to Zubeen ji because he gave voice to the sentiments of the people of Assam. I went to pay tributes to him.”

Her remarks come amid intensifying political exchanges in Assam, with the ruling BJP and the Congress engaged in an increasingly sharp war of words as the state heads toward Assembly elections expected within the next two months.
