Assam: A completed flyover, built to alleviate long-standing traffic congestion at a railway crossing between Dhubri and Gauripur, remains closed to traffic, forcing daily commuters to endure hours of waiting at the gates.
The approximately one-kilometer-long, two-lane Gauripur rail flyover was constructed to bypass the busy level crossing, which frequently brought traffic to a standstill between the two towns. The civil work is complete, and the contractor has handed over the project to the railway department. Yet, the structure remains unopened.
“The work is finished. The asphalt has been laid. The contractor has left. So why are we still stuck for hours at the railway gates?” questioned a daily commuter, a sentiment now common throughout the area.
Local sources suggest the delay is administrative, not technical. While the bridge is ready, final clearances and coordination between the district administration and the railway department are yet to be completed. No official date has been announced for the flyover’s opening.
The impact is most acutely felt during emergencies. Ambulances are frequently stuck at the railway crossing, wasting precious time, while thousands of commuters traveling between the two towns face daily disruptions, affecting work and essential services.
Residents describe the situation as deeply frustrating, pointing out that the very infrastructure built to solve the problem has become another symbol of the delay. Appeals from local organizations have so far failed to elicit a clear answer on when the flyover will be opened.
Until the remaining formalities are completed, the people of Dhubri district wait – watching a multi-crore public project lie idle while traffic jams persist below.
