ban on eating dog meat
Seoul. South Korea will ban the consumption of dog meat. This was announced by ruling party chief Yu Eui-dong. There has been a long-running global controversy over the consumption of dog meat in South Korea. Animal protection organizations are also opposing this.
According to the Animal Welfare Institute, 200,000 dogs are killed in the country every year. At the same time, about 100,000 tons of dog meat is consumed annually. Meanwhile, the number of people eating dogs is gradually decreasing. The government is preparing to impose a complete ban on dog eating by 2027. The government will bring a law on this issue later this year.
“The government will provide all possible assistance to farmers, butchers and others who will suffer business losses due to this law,” the political leader said. A law banning dog meat has already been introduced several times in South Korea. However, the deal could not be accepted due to opposition from those involved. According to Reuters, a provision for a three-year grace period and financial assistance will be added to the new bill.
First Lady Kim Kyung-hee, wife of South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol, has long opposed the consumption of dog meat. Along with the President, he also adopted many stray dogs. On the other hand, Animal Rights Group has welcomed this decision. Humane Society International said: “For those who worked on this campaign, it is a dream come true.” According to the South Korean government, there are approximately 1,150 dog farms in the country. There are approximately 1,600 restaurants that serve dog meat. There are 34 meat producing slaughterhouses in the country and about 219 companies selling dog meat. According to a Gallup Korea poll, about 64 percent of people opposed eating dog meat last year. Between 2015 and 2022, the number of people eating this meat has declined by about 20 percent.
