Bank holiday in parts of Northeast, digital services to remain operational

Guwahati: Banks in many parts of Northeast India, including Aizawl in Mizoram, will be closed today, Friday, January 2, 2026, due to New Year celebrations and Mannam Jayanti. This is according to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) holiday calendar for 2026.
According to the RBI, banks in the region observe holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, which includes mandatory weekly closures on the second Saturday and Sunday of every month, as well as regional and national holidays. People are advised to check branch-specific schedules before planning a visit.
In the Northeast, bank branches in Aizawl will be closed today, while branches in Guwahati, Imphal, Shillong, Itanagar, and Kohima will remain open. Customers in these cities are advised to plan their transactions accordingly.

The RBI stated that essential banking services will continue to operate through digital and self-service platforms despite the physical closure. These include:
Online and mobile banking for fund transfers, balance enquiry, and bill payments
NEFT and RTGS services, which will operate as per operational windows
ATM withdrawals and card transactions
Requests for chequebooks, demand drafts, and account-related services
The central bank also stated that banks across India will observe 10 holidays in January 2026. People are urged to rely on digital banking platforms to ensure uninterrupted access to financial services during the holidays.
