Basketball accident: Officials arrived in the village to assess the possibility of an indoor stadium.
The Sports Department has sought a feasibility report from the District Sports Office regarding the demand for an indoor basketball stadium in Lakhan Majra village.
Sixteen-year-old national-level player Hardik Rathi died on November 25 after a pole fell on him while he was practicing at the village’s basketball court.
The village’s Gram Panchayat had submitted a resolution to the Chief Minister and the Sports Minister in support of this demand.
A team from the District Sports Office visited the village on Friday to assess the feasibility of an indoor stadium. The sarpanch, Hardik’s family, coaches, and players were present during the visit.
An official said, “The team gathered information regarding the number of youngsters practicing at the stadium, the land available for the proposed facility, the presence of similar facilities in nearby areas, and the potential benefits for players from surrounding villages.” He confirmed that there is sufficient space at the village stadium to construct an indoor facility. Currently, the reconstruction of the flooring of both basketball courts at the stadium is underway under the MPLAD grant. The official added, “There is a proforma for assessing the feasibility of such a project, and all the necessary information has been collected.”
Sarpanch Sandeep said that the panchayat is ready to provide land for the stadium. He said, “The panchayat will pass a resolution in this regard if needed.”
Hardik’s father, Sandeep Rathi, said that their only demand is that the stadium be named after his son. He said, “This facility will provide a safe place for budding players to practice, serve as a tribute to Hardik, and inspire future athletes.”
